Reference Post - Moderator Application Process

Moderator positions are never taken lightly. In consideration of a new mod, the current mods weigh several key factors in a member’s past and current situation. Seniority will not guarantee you a mod position, nor will activity level or previous mod experience.

The following factors are considered for each moderator. Please keep this in mind when requesting promotion to mod or nominating someone for promotion to mod. Additional factors, such as current verse needs, will also weigh in the current mods decisions.

When a moderator position opens up, all interested parties must submit a statement of intent to the current moderators.

1) Availability. This may seem obvious, but we want one of the moderators to be readily available at all times. The game’s players span the entire globe, and in this we’d like to have someone available for all our players. Availability also includes current work load. If a player is currently bogged down with several other communities, games, or muses, or their real lives are too hectic, this may be a deterrent.

2) Knowledge of the verse and it’s players. We do not expect our moderators to know the inner workings of every plot, but we do prefer that across the entire mod team, a general understanding for all in play plots is held. Moderators will be asked to track threads, read summaries, and report to the mod team regarding verse goings on at regular intervals. Moderators will need to either be able to answer players questions regarding plots, or be able to direct them to the right person to answer these questions. We also expect the mods to be able to communicate civilly with ALL members. Personalities will not always mesh, but a mod must be able to remain objective and calm when communicating with all members on a moderator level.

3) Conflict resolutions. Mod nominees will be asked to provide no less than three (3) instances of successful conflict resolution that they have participated in either as part of a team or individually. The size of these instances may vary, and they may be in verse or out of verse. A successful conflict resolution is defined as the parties involved being brought to a mutual agreement and understanding.

Additionally, the nominee must provide an instance of at least one (1) unsuccessful conflict resolution, and provide the steps they would have taken to make the situation a success otherwise.

They must also cite one case in which they were forced to remove a problem player from a verse and describe, in detail (not naming names, of course) how the situation was handled by themselves and the moderation team in question.

Previous mod experience is not required and will not guarantee a mod position, but it is a plus. More important that anything is in-game experience. To be a good mod, you have to be a good player. You have to be able to provide input and listen, you have to be brave enough to be straight with your fellow mods if you disagree and above all, you have to care about the well being of the community as a whole.

MOD PROMOTIONS - FINAL STEPS

After the preceding factors have been considered for a minimum of 48 hours, a the current moderators will vote on all the nominees.

In the event of a tie one of several tie breakers will occur.
The nominees may be asked to provide additional examples of why they would be a good mod.

They may be asked to resolve a ‘dummy’ conflict created by the current mods, or perhaps assist in a real conflict.

Finally, the voting can be brought to the verse members themselves.

Campaigning for votes in this event will not be allowed. The verse members must be allowed to render a choice that is theirs and theirs alone.
